Our history
Despers USA Steel Orchestra Inc., founded in 1976 by members of the renowned Desperadoes Steel Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago, has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of steelpan music. With players ranging from ages 7 to 70 and band sizes from 1 to 100, Despers USA exemplifies excellence through its slogan:

Known for their professionalism and competitive spirit, Despers USA has set a high standard in the steelpan community. They are the first band to win ten New York Steel Band Panorama titles (1982, 1987, 1990, 1993-1998, 2018), including an unmatched streak of six consecutive wins.
Musical Director
Odie Franklin has served as the Musical Director of Despers USA for the past ten years, exemplifying the success of the organization's mentorship. Joining Despers USA at a young age, Odie pursued music in ways few could imagine, competing globally in numerous pan competitions and becoming a highly sought-after arranger for bands and organizations. Returning to his roots, Mr. Franklin led Despers USA to victory in the 2018 NY Panorama Competitionand continues to guide the band with passion and expertise.
